One of the "must do" attractions that visitors to Paignton must experience while on holiday here is the Paignton to Dartmouth Steam Railway. I don´t really know why it is, but a steam engine has a magical feel about it, maybe it´s the Harry Potter films! Something that electric or diesel just does not have.
The steam train can be boarded at Paignton Station or Goodrington Station for a slow journey along the beautiful 7 miles of South Devon coast, taking in the fantastic sea views and country setting.
This can also be combined with a boat trip back, just visit their website and make your choice; travel Torbay´s spectacular coast and the beautiful River Dart by steam train from Paignton to Kingswear, then on to Dartmouth by passenger ferry. Combine this with a circular river cruise on our Boat Train service, or cruise up-river to Totnes and take our open-top bus back to Paignton for a complete day out on the Round Robin service.
Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway from Paignton is the holiday line with steam trains running for seven miles in Great Western tradition along the spectacular Torbay coast to Goodrington station, then Churston station and through the wooded slopes bordering the Dart estuary to Kingswear.
Dartmouth Station is unique in that it has never seen a train. In GWR days, passengers would arrive at the station by means of the ferry from Kingswear. The line was originally laid to Brunel´s broad gauge, but was converted to standard gauge in May 1892.
